Were I the potential hiring manager and you told me you had to reschedule due to issues that needed your attention ( downed systems etc) at your current job - I would not hold it against you.
I'd put that in the PLUS column.
My boss is aggravated because people are saying that this backup AC unit for our IDF is in their way. I can't do anything until the building guy gets the ducting in. It was supposed to be done about 4 months ago. Well, turnabout is fair play. Now I get to aggravate the building manager and his boss.
a vendor sent in a chair massage place for our office.
was nice.

Nice - it's the little things ( aside form delivering on what they promise on) that keep a Vendor in the forefront of your mind.

Why don't you just asset tag each machine and just ask the user what the tag is?

Haha, they are. Every machine. But the majority of our staff (sadly, that includes the majority of the engineers too) don't understand what the word asset means in relation to a machine. Even though there's a really obvious blue sticker on every case!
luckily we're small enough so that i know where everyone sits
and their jack number is in their machine's comment

Just figured out that the data corruption I've been seeing on the backup server is likely due to a bug specific to the particular mobo / RAID controller combo. Which means it ain't gonna get fixed, and I'm gonna have to rebuild the thing with another storage controller. Sigh.
hi

fucking the boot.ini is all weird and it pointed to rdisk 1 instead of 0 since the thumbdrive thought it was 0
oops

My computer, well, the one I just sold, always tried booting to my USB drive whenever it was in, even though I had it set last on the list of boot device priority, and I could never fix it save to remove the USB drive, so good luck figuring out a permanent fix
sometimes they show up as hard drives

Anyone here use Bigfix for patching?
I'm in TN this week. Tons of work here.
I've mentioned before that we've on 20% pay cuts and 4-day weeks here except for the top management plus me, who are on 10% cut and 5-day weeks. It's not public knowledge that we have a smaller reduction.
We just went back to 5-day weeks for everyone and were told they were reducing the pay cut to 10% for everyone. I ASSumed that would mean I'd get my full salary back. Nope. Just confirmed with the HR director who is at our office here that we would stay the same. I was counting on getting that money back.
FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.

You don't happen to be working with a certain big blue do you?
Nah, automotive supplier. Much worse.
We have a baby due in May. I was really, really, really counting on this money.
I contract to that certain entity above and they cut our bill rates a while back and forced unpaid vacations on us also so it sounded familiar.

What the hell? Microsoft laid off Don Dodge. Morons.
Ron, the answer is always reboot!
Dammit! Rob
You geeks will appreciate this.
I have a VMware ESXi server running a couple of virtualized Server 2003 machines. I'm connected to them by RDC running on a virtulized XP machine inside of VMware Fusion running in a "space" (virtual desktop) of my Macbook Pro, am getting great performance, and can toggle back and forth between XP and OS X with a keystroke or mouse gesture. Virtual desktop running virtual machine connecting to virtual machine, all in full screen, and you can hardly tell.
I guess I could get more geeky by doing it over VPN from the hotel, but the performance hit might cancel the geekiness.

you knew long ago that all we were waiting for was bandwidth for this shit.
well that and cheap enough RAM to handle the images smoothly.
Used to be noticable pauses between my desk and the server room.
I agree, love it now.

A year ago Microsoft told me that they wouldn't support my SharePoint 2007 farm in a virtual environment.
I told them to feel free to connect to any of my front end servers and let me know me if they're virtual.
Dumbasses.

Didn't you have an In with this place?
I do.
I'll ask him what he thinks later on.
I'm not making a lateral money or position move, regardless.

I'm not going to put him on the spot, I have a job that I mostly like that, when I think about it, likes me back and compensates me pretty well.
There's some jacked up people and some jacked up practices, but I'm sure you'll find those anywhere.

I think I'm going to talk to my boss about getting me an underling.
That would help me and the company, IMHO.

getting me an underling
yeah, get some junior admin that can learn quickly.
I really think I can justify it, if I can spend more time on "higher level shit" I think it would provide more benefit than what the dude costs.
How can I quantify that?
