Ok, that last thing was a file / folder access problem, zune just didn't seem to know it failed to sync.
Now I know I am old, and I only know how to tell computers what to do, I don't do well when they try and do shit for me, especially when its not what I want to do at all....
I have huge collection of out of print music in MP3 only format..
so when I tell zune to only look at one folder (making this my entire library as a test), say Bill Monroe 1936-1946, it picks out some of the albums, but when I click on the, say instead of 15 songs, there are only 3 listed. I find this systematically throughout.
I know there is something I don't fundamentally understand, so I REALLY appreciate your patience.
If this is some automatic database failure ? Can I just tell it to add a folder.... I can't be dependent on their database, what about all the old demo albums, and bootlegs (permitted) I have encoded that are not in release ?

It sounds to me like you probably having metadata problems. If your metadata isn't set properly it can cause problems sometimes when the software is trying to organize it. I had a similar problem with a bunch of random internet content I downloaded.
Try editing some of the metadata on some of the tracks that aren't showing up and see if that lets you add them. Right click on one of the files you're having problems with, select properties and then go to details (in Vista at least), check out what info is entered for artist, album, etc., see if it is set to anything useful.
So we're still working with Symantec on creating new Definitions.
Currently this looks like a variant of W32.Spybot.worm.
I decompiled it and it's coming out being controlled by some systems in China.
It also has multiple proxies in just about every country.
This is why you need to keep spyware off your machine.
All those infected machines are fucking up my night.
Goddamn botnets.

You have to admire the complexity sometimes though.
I did a ton of research on phishing methods in the wild, and some of the complexity behind the methods was astonishing.

ya this one is like a swiss army knife.
every time we block something, it just goes a different route.
It started out trying to use IRC for command and control.
Then it switched to ftp.
Then it switched to HTTP.
That one got us... we can't really block port 80. :(

Unfortunately like the example I showed, it take 1 album and splits it over 3 with the same cover shown but it 3 links under albums, I'm sure there is a problem with the MetaData, I probably have 1,000 mp3's without correct data, I can't correct them all. Basically I bought the wrong device then ?
So basically, I'm screwed unless I want to edit all these tags.
oh and as to how we got it.
3rd party vendor.
The fucking outsources.
Goddamn indians.

No, every modern device will do the same thing. If there are punctuation differences, or spelling differences, things will be split.

Yes.

I used this frigging no name mp3 player once for a trip, I dragged on the folder (and sub structures) and chose a folder to play and played it... sigh.
Just put on some headphones, put on a playlist, and spend a couple hours organizing stuff.
Do it once, back your shit up, and you're golden.

I don't think this is Zune specific, any of the more advanced management software that tries to organize your collection and provide a content rich environment (get album art automagically, etc.) is going to have a problem with this sort of thing.
I'd say that sooner or later you're going to have to deal with this, so you might just want to get it over with.
The good news is it can actually be pretty easy. If you've got albums that are split up you can just drag and drop them together (in the software drag one album onto the other) and the software will edit the corresponding metadata for you. Also you can populate your metadata automatically for items that aren't marked properly by right clicking on the album, selecting "find album info" and following the prompts.
I know this is a pain, but there is really no way around it if you want to use all of the cool features of the Zune. Back in the day this kind of stuff wasn't as fancy so a lot of people didn't bother setting metadata very carefully.
Maybe you would be happier with another player, but once you get your library set up properly I think you'll probably like it a lot better...
Let me know if you need some more help.

Hey Mr Jesus
Try mp3tag to help fix your tags.
It helped this particular middle aged person tame thousands of files.
Took a while, but it satisfied my need for order.
Side note.. Symantec .. ya they suck balls.
We have "platinum" support which apparently translates into "gold plated" support.
Between them having shift rotations every 30 minutes, a bunch of fucks from Dublin who speak... well i guess they call it English... and their total lack of concern, we continue to sit here without useful virus definitions.

i have a problem with firefox and IE frequently crashing when accessing .PDF files online - any tips to stop this happening? it happens when i first load a document. the second time (when i click restore after firefox crashes) it works fine. this happens about 80% of the time
Whatever you do don't upgrade to Adobe Reader 9. That was a mistake to deploy at work.
It has some huge issues with the add-on used for viewing PDFs in IE.
Make sure you're running 8.1.3 for the security reasons.
(Open Reader and choose Help > About Adobe Reader #...)
Otherwise I would suggest opening Adobe Reader and go to Edit > Preferences... > Internet.
Uncheck Display PDF in Browsers and then close after it configures Reader.
Then reopen, recheck the box, let it configure and then closer Reader.
Make sure you've done this w/ FF and / or IE closed.
Then try to view a PDF in a browser again.

WSUS didn't have the update listed after a manual synchronization.
Either way I found the update by searching and approved it.
Just download the Foxit Reader, it blows acrobat out of the water.
Foxit Reader FTW.
We're still waiting on Symantec to come up with a definition.
MacAfee doesn't have one yet either.
Some of the smaller vendors have ID'd part of the virus but not the whole thing.

I feel bad for DirtyUser. It's a virus and a worm? That stinks. Hope you get (got?) some sleep.
Still dicking with it.
I just left work.
Because I fell asleep at my desk.
Gotta get some rest and then go back.
Did I mention I hate Symantec?

barracuda networks appliances, yay or nay?
should i be scripting in bash or c shell? which is used more? does it even matter?
It depends what you're doing.
Scripting languages all have a purpose or philosophy, and this generally makes them better at some things than others.
For instance if you want to be doing a bunch of text parsing you probably want to use Perl.

unix administration, mostly for moving data around. tar and zip here, push to ftp there.
I'd say bash.
But I'm hardly a unix expert.
My favorite language in the world is C#.
You can all go ahead and make fun of me now.

for those kinds of things I would also stick to bash.
one kinda get used to c# after a while and it starts looking kind of pretty and neat and comfy and all
If you were a Perl wizard, I think you could do the same stuff,
but bash might be the most efficient if you're not proficient in anything yet.

It's just easy. Given the kind of work I do I'm rarely interested in streamlining the shit out of things, so if I can spend a third the time writing it in C# as I would in C++/COM then why the hell not?
I don't care if most serious coders make fun of it, I like it.

Perl can definitely do it, it is an unbelievably flexible language. Wouldn't need to be a wizard per say.
I just hesitate to recommend it for anything other than text because it's so fucking impenetrable in terms of syntax. Why deal with that if you don't already know it...
Shit like this:
while(<>) {
/^(\w+)/;
print $_.',';
}Just sucks to try to wrap your head around the first time.

idk if my solaris boxes have perl, but i know a buddy of mine loves it. right now i'm writing for c shell. i just want to invest time into something that i'll be able to use in the future.

Still cleaning up after the virus.
i think we have it contained.
North, Central, and South America were infected.
Some infections in Europe.
Nothing in Asia.
A few in Australia.
Symantec still can't fix it completely.
So we wrote our own fixer utility.
I'm down to about 80 boxes left infected.
