Robert Byrd (D-WV) actually was a Grand Wizard of the KKK.
Byrd joined the Ku Klux Klan when he was 24 in 1942. His local chapter unanimously elected him Exalted Cyclops.[6]
According to Byrd, a Klan official told him, "You have a talent for leadership, Bob... The country needs young men like you in the leadership of the nation." Byrd later recalled, "suddenly lights flashed in my mind! Someone important had recognized my abilities! I was only 23 or 24 years old, and the thought of a political career had never really hit me. But strike me that night, it did."[6] Byrd held the titles Kleagle (recruiter) and Exalted Cyclops.[6]
In 1944, Byrd wrote to segregationist Mississippi Senator Theodore Bilbo:[9]
“ I shall never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by my side... Rather I should die a thousand times, and see Old Glory trampled in the dirt never to rise again, than to see this beloved land of ours become degraded by race mongrels, a throwback to the blackest specimen from the wilds. ”
— Robert C. Byrd, in a letter to Sen. Theodore Bilbo (D-MS), 1944, [6][10]
When running for the United States House of Representatives in 1952, he announced "After about a year, I became disinterested, quit paying my dues, and dropped my membership in the organization. During the nine years that have followed, I have never been interested in the Klan." He said he had joined the Klan because he felt it offered excitement and was anti-communist.[6] However, in 1946 or 1947 he wrote a letter to a Grand Wizard stating, "The Klan is needed today as never before and I am anxious to see its rebirth here in West Virginia and in every state in the nation."[11]
In 1997, he told an interviewer he would encourage young people to become involved in politics, but to "Be sure you avoid the Ku Klux Klan. Don't get that albatross around your neck. Once you've made that mistake, you inhibit your operations in the political arena."[12] In his latest autobiography, Byrd explained that he was a member because he "was sorely afflicted with tunnel vision — a jejune and immature outlook — seeing only what I wanted to see because I thought the Klan could provide an outlet for my talents and ambitions."[13] Byrd also said, in 2005,
“ I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times... and I don't mind apologizing over and over again. I can't erase what happened.

Ah, the south.
Dude... you're defending the former LEADER of the KKK? Whether he truly had a change of heart or not, he was still a hardcore racist at one time... enough of a racist to be the leader of them.
Shameful.
Shameful.
What do you think of Thomas Jefferson, JC?

I despise racist motherfuckers. I posted that and then said, "Ah, the south."
Meaning, par for the course, there's racists, bigots and retards all over that economic black hole.
what do you mean by "black hole"?
i take it to mean that he's excluding Texas from "the south"
yea for real? Got something against the south do ya?
There are racists all over.

Of course. Austin is a city in texas, and it's pretty sweet.
Texas is more "The South" than Georgia.
Much of "The South" has progressed. Texas....

Wait, wait, wait.
I thought we had agreed in this thread that racism was okay and to be protected by the law?

Libertarian
There are racists all over.
Yeah, but the southern type of racism is so much crunchier than anywhere else.
I think it's the all the Southern Baptism in the air that makes it so good.
I thought we had agreed in this thread that racism was okay and to be protected by the law?
Ugh. Freedom of expression and speech is different than freedom to discriminate.
Texas is more "The South" than Georgia.
Yeah but Georgia's GDP sucks.
Short of the white sheets and burning crosses southern racism is, at least, more up-front and less insidious. Tell me to my face instead of stabbing me in the back.

And Texas' GOP gave us GWB.
So I'm free to discriminate through my speech, regardless of my position
of power in the government, but any sort of action on my publicly held
discriminatory beliefs would be illegal? I can say "fuck the spics and the
kikes" and that's perfectly fine, but if I try to keep a Jew from having a
job, and he can prove it's because he was Jewish, then it becomes wrong?
I'm not asking about what the law is, I'm asking about what you think it should be.

Of people I've met from around the US, New Englanders for whatever reason have seemed to be the most racist.
I grew up in Texas. There was racism, sure, but the truly racist people were outcasts and generally smarmy people. It wasn't socially acceptable. Oddly enough, the most racist kid in my school had moved to TX from Ohio.

It's not about right or wrong. If it was, and if we wanted to legislate morality, this country would be an entirely different place. Probably a much scarier place.
If you can't wrap your head around that, I'm not sure this conversation is one worth having.
If you were a black guy going out with a white woman.
Would you rather go for an evening stroll with your girlfriend in rural New England or rural Texas?

You can't legislate thoughts, only actions.
If you are in an elected position you would be voted out....unless you are in a really racist part of the country (Like say.. Joe Arpaio)

kikes" and that's perfectly fine
I'd say it depends.
Some people, some of the time can say it and fuck 'em, who cares.
But other people, other times say it and they need to be reprimanded/punished/whatever/depends.
No, no, I get that.
I'll just always think it's funny how there will be people
who will defend every perverted and grotesque action
and belief in society as an act of free speech and the
freedom of happiness.

All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing.

Yeah but we can't try to make that part of the country less racist!
That's unAmerican!

I don't think there'd be much difference.
There was a lot of interracial dating at my high school, which was roughly 50% white, 24% black, 24% hispanic, and 2% other.
Nobody took issue with it.
One girl's parents wouldn't let her date my Mexican friend, but other than that nobody really cared.
And this was a pretty rural place. Our high school had a rodeo team ffs.

People should be allowed to be assholes, say really retarded things, get really angry, pin teabags on themselves, deny global warming trends and dress up in blackface. And you know what? We should be allowed to ridicule them for their idiocy. In public. The more open people are and the more free people feel to say shit to eachother, the easier it is to tell who they are.
The moment we legislate racist sentiments and statements as criminal is NOT the moment racism disappears. The more we can confront real racism and racist sentiments, the better. The more racist sentiment is outlawed, it will become obscured and insidious.
For instance, I had a falling out recently with my parents about Prop 8 here in California. The moment it was brought to my attention that my family was bigoted I was able to confront them. Call them out.
If that kind of hate speech was outlawed, they would never have to think logically about their position -- and while they may never, at least I was able to try to do something.
There is racism, then there is racism.
I'll admit it, you goyim amuse me to no end. Always so serious. You people buy the most ridiculous things.
The shvartzes, I like, but do they have to be so loud with the clothing and the music and the metal teeth and all the whatnots?
Asians are fine by me, without them, we would starve on christmas day.

That's to be expected when you lock her in the trunk.

What? If something's illegal then usually the first
thing people do is ask questions.
"Why can't we kill people that we don't like if we don't care about them?"
"Well, Timmy, because that's morally repugnant and wrong."
versus
"Why can't we call people niggers like grandpa used to if they're black and I hate them?"
"BECAUSE THE GOVERNMENT WANTS TO TELL US WHAT TO DO!"
I mean, sure, you can always avoid logic if
you're just really ignorant or really stupid.
Keeping something legal or illegal won't
change the ideas of someone who's so firmly
grounded in their own hatred.
How is calling a 5 year old girl a "nigger" any better than flashing her?
Why is one illegal and the other is simply frowned upon?

LOL
No, please explain it.
It's exposing the disgusting parts of yourself to someone
who not only doesn't deserve it but even if they did doesn't
need you making that call.
Showing her your penis will damage her for life and
you're an incredibly fucked up person for it (and I
don't disagree), but directing your utter hatred and
disdain directly at her without a real cause just
because you're THAT fucked up of a person is just
something you shouldn't do but not something you'll
go to jail for?

Wow.
Wait a minute.
Are you saying you'd rather hang out with a bunch of racists
than a bunch of naked people? Wow, clives. I didn't figure you
as someone who would be so afraid of the human body.

wow...
sorry dude.
i just don't see freedom of cockwaving as being as central to the democratic ideal as the freedom of speech.
I think your mistake is to focus on the impact on the victim in both cases.
While both actions may have similar impacts on the victim, we accept the ill effects of hate speech for the public benefit of a near-pure freedom of speech.
Freedom to wave your dick at kids has that negative effect on the victim while not providing any substantial public benefit.

What benefit does hate-speech provide? Is there something that I'm missing in all of the racial slurs and accusations?

Exposing yourself to a child is not "being naked."
Calling someone a name, however horrible the name,
shouldn't be a crime. We have a first amendment
and it protects the bad with the good,
because you can't protect one and not the other
without getting into thought-policing.

No. You're missing the point entirely.
Freedom of (all) speech is a highly valued ideal, central to the liberalization of modern democracies.
Please don't ask me to expand on why this is important.
Please don't ask me to expand on why this is important.
"near-pure freedom of speech" may not be as much of a benefit as you think
Beestinga are you saying you'd rather fuck a goat than kill a monkey? Is that what you're saying?
If you walk by a kid when you're
already naked, they wouldn't try to charge
you with whatever child exposure is called?
I bet they would.
Anyway, it's a public benefit to the really fucked up people
who like to be racist in public. For people like me it's not a
benefit. I guess the benefit I get out of it is that I get to yell
back at them? That's not a lot of consolation.
I'll make due.

Yeah, I gave up.
Careful, sweetheart.
I'll yell at you.
I'll yell at you.
Just don't call her a dyke,
that shit should be illegal.
that shit should be illegal.
