OWOW
Wtf is a steam pipe used for?
Mind you I'm the 29th floor
It was about 5:50ish when I hear rumbling coming from our A/C system.
I paid no mind at first, then it got louder and louder by the minute.
At 6 on the dot, building crew ask everyone to evacute the building.
So I leave I seen everyone running to the emergency exits.
At first I thought WTF? the a/c is going back its not a big deal.
then someone yelled, there is smoke coming from down below.
Then it hit me...I need to get the fuck out.
So I run my ass down all 29 flights of steps
Let me tell you, that is no fun.
My legs are still sore.
To be continued....

NO MOONPIES!!!!
As I was heading down I notice the noise was decrease.
Fiqured everything died down.
The moment I hit the first floor.
The entire building was shaking, massive loud rumbling noise was getting louder the closer I got to the exit.
This is when I really got scared...
I seen people exit, look right towards lexington...then vanish.
Running like madmen towards 3rd avenue.
I thought WTF is going on!
I step outside...
You couldn't see anything past the corner of my building. From all the smoke/gas/steam...whatever it is.
Ofcourse the first thing I did in Fazed fashion.
Get motherfucking proof.
Whipped out my cellphone and snap some shots.

I have to say.
That was probably the most exciting/scariest moment in my life.
The rumbling was no joke. It almost felt like the building was going to collapse.

Wtf is a steam pipe used for?
For air conditioning in the summer. Heat for winter. There several types of steam-cooling systems. These include steam turbine driven centrifugal chillers, single stage absorption chillers, two stage absorption chillers, and steam turbine generators that produce electricity and then exhaust into steam chillers, producing electricity and chilled water. Steam cooling can dramatically reduce electricity costs by minimizing a building’s peak electric demand, which can lower electric costs.
Thanks wikipedia!
Uhm....

I got that juicy tid-bit from Tri-gen's webpage. I'm a power plant engineer making steam right now. Lot's of it.
You guys tonight I have sex with a transformer.
I think you misread the ad.
A bit of thermite in a trashcan covering a manhole cover could do the trick.
Or just gain pipe access and turn up/off the valves.
I was listening to one radio report and a woman called in, saying a man fell down in front of her store with little to no skin and open flesh from 3rd degree burns.

I am just shock that only 1 person died.
That corner has a popular bus stop, not to mention an train exit.
If I had left when I wanted to, I probably be in the hospital or dead right now.
I pass by that exact spot every day to get home and to work.
